Whether it’s in tomato sauce, but in Vietnamese: how about a change?

Vietnamese meatballs in tomato sauce are true comfort food and so easy to make. We show you how it works:

Ingredients for 12 meatballs:

  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 3 spring onion sticks
  • 500 g of mixed minced meat
  • Salt pepper
  • sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fish sauce
  • 3 tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 spoons of pearl sauce
  • 40 ml of water
  • 1/2 chili pepper (for garnish)
  • fresh coriander (for garnish)

And this is how it is done:


  1. Peel and finely chop the garlic. Wash the fresh onions and cut them into thin rings. Mix the minced meat well with salt, pepper, a little sugar, fish sauce and half of the onions. Shape the mixture into 12 small balls.
  2. Heat a pan with a little oil on a medium-high flame. Arrange the meatballs in the middle and fry them covered for about 4-5 minutes until they are well browned at the end. Fry the meatballs in two batches. Then place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess fat.
  3. Wash the tomatoes and roughly chop them. In the same pan, roast the garlic. Add the tomatoes. Season with salt, sugar, soy sauce and oyster sauce. Fry for 4-5 minutes until the tomato is soft. Pour in water to form a sauce and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and garnish with the remaining scallions. Optionally, garnish with chopped chilies and fresh coriander. Finished!
